Quick Answer

  • Y62 (5.6L V8): the aFe Momentum GT Pro DRY S is the proven pick — +24 HP / +37 lb-ft torque on aFe's own dyno, outflows factory by 21%.[1]
  • Y61 (4.8L TB48): aFe Magnum FORCE Stage-2 Pro DRY S — the only full-system intake currently available for the TB48 inline-six, price: DHS. 2,095.00 AED.
  • Dry vs oiled: Dry (Pro DRY S) is the better choice in the UAE — no oil re-application needed, no risk of over-oiling damaging the MAF sensor, and it actually outflows the oiled version.[2]
  • Pair with: a throttle body spacer adds low-end torque response, and a 90° high-flow air filter is the drop-in option if you're not ready for the full intake system yet.

1. Why upgrade the intake on a Patrol?

The factory airbox on both the Y61 and Y62 is designed for a compromise — minimal noise, minimal intake restriction from dust, and a price point that suits a global bill of materials. Three things change when you bolt in an aFe Momentum GT or Magnum FORCE:

  1. More air, more power

Cold air intakes deliver cooler, denser air to the engine. The aFe Momentum GT system for the Y62 outflows the factory intake by 21%, with a CAD-designed roto-molded intake tube tuned on aFe's in-house dyno.[1] In real terms: +24 peak HP, +37 lb-ft torque.

  2. Better filtration in UAE dust

The Pro DRY S media is a 3-layer progressively finer synthetic filter engineered for dust-heavy environments. It filters down to very fine particulates without the oil re-application that oiled filters require every 10,000-15,000 km.[2] For a Patrol that spends weekends in Liwa or Sweihan, this matters.

  3. Throttle response under load

The real-world benefit most drivers feel isn't peak horsepower — it's the lower mid-range response when climbing a dune face or towing. More torque earlier in the rev range means less time at high RPM and less heat soak in the engine bay.

2. Y62 (5.6L VK56DE V8) — your options

The 2010-present Patrol Y62 ships with Nissan's VK56DE 5.6L V8. aFe's system for this engine is probably the most documented aftermarket intake in the Nissan V8 aftermarket — here's what's in stock and what it does.

3. Y61 (4.8L TB48) — your options

The 1997-2016 Y61 with the TB48 inline-six is harder to find performance parts for, but aFe supports it with a proper stage-2 system. The Y61 4.8 is legendary in the GCC for low-end torque; the Stage-2 keeps that character while unlocking a bit more breathing at the top end.

4. Dry vs oiled filter — which belongs in a UAE Patrol?

aFe makes two filter media families: Pro DRY S (dry, synthetic) and Pro 5R (oiled cotton gauze). Both deliver power gains, but the numbers and maintenance profile differ — and UAE conditions tilt the recommendation.

Media Y62 dyno gain[1] Maintenance Best for
Pro DRY S (synthetic, 3-layer) +24 HP / +37 lb-ft Wash & dry — no oil. Every 15-20k km. UAE dust, minimal-fuss owners, MAF-sensor engines
Pro 5R (oiled cotton, 5-layer) +15 HP / +29 lb-ft Clean + re-oil every 10-15k km Owners who want the extra filter layers & don't mind re-oiling
Why we lean toward Dry in the UAE: over-oiled filters are a known cause of MAF-sensor contamination on modern V8s. An oil-saturated filter during a dune run shakes droplets downstream, which coat the MAF hot-wire and cause long-term lean/rich drift. Dry synthetic media avoids the problem entirely. This is also why aFe's dyno numbers favour the DRY variant.[2]

5. Supporting parts worth adding

An intake upgrade on its own is a meaningful gain. Pair it with these items for the biggest combined effect:

Throttle body spacer

aFe's Silver Bullet (46-36003 for Y62, 46-36006 for Y61) creates controlled turbulence in the intake plenum, improving low-RPM torque. Stacks additively with the intake system.

Cat-back exhaust

More intake air is wasted if the exhaust can't expel it quickly. A cat-back exhaust (aFe, Magnaflow, Borla) complements the intake and recovers the last few HP the restriction was costing you.

ECU tune

For the biggest single gain, a custom tune from a reputable GCC tuner (on a DynoJet or similar) can add another 10-20 HP by optimising air-fuel ratio and timing maps for your new airflow. Ask us for a referral.

Silicone coolant hoses

If you're pushing the engine harder or towing, silicone hose kits (like SPH-series) resist heat fatigue and won't bulge under pressure like aged OEM rubber.

Trans cooler (Y62)

The Y62's 7-speed transmission generates heat under load. Adding an auxiliary trans cooler is the single best reliability upgrade for Patrols that tow caravans or run long desert pulls.

Fresh spark plugs

A new intake flows more air — if the spark plugs are tired, you leave power on the table. A fresh set of NGK iridium plugs (stock-heat-range) is a cheap pairing.

6. Installation & warranty notes

DIY or workshop?

The Momentum GT for the Y62 is a 1-2 hour job with basic hand tools — no cutting, no drilling. Installation is genuinely bolt-on. The Y61 Stage-2 is similar but requires more attention to the MAF relocation. If you're comfortable removing the factory airbox and plumbing, you can install either at home.

Warranty

Installing an aftermarket intake does not void the factory powertrain warranty in any GCC market. Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (which GCC dealers generally follow), the dealer must prove the aftermarket part caused the failure to deny a claim. In practice, an aFe intake is safer than many other mods because it re-uses the factory MAF sensor and doesn't alter engine control logic.

Sound

Expect a noticeable intake whoosh under hard acceleration — particularly on the V8. This is the point. Passenger-cabin sound is a function of the heat-shield seal; an aFe Momentum GT with a properly seated seal is quieter than most aftermarket alternatives at cruise.

7. Frequently asked questions

Will this affect my fuel economy?

In light-throttle cruising, fuel economy changes are typically within measurement noise (±2%). Under load the engine is more efficient per unit of work done, which can actually improve economy in demanding conditions like towing or dune climbing.

Do I need a dyno tune afterwards?

No — aFe kits are designed to work with the factory ECU's adaptive learning within the first 100-200 km. A tune is optional if you want to chase the last HP; otherwise the kit works out of the box.

How often do I clean the filter?

Inspect every 5,000-10,000 km and clean when visually dirty. aFe's cleaning kit (90-50501 for dry media) includes spray cleaner and instructions. In UAE dust, expect to clean 2-3x per year if you offroad regularly.

Can I dyno-prove the gains locally in UAE?

Yes — there are dyno facilities in Dubai and Abu Dhabi that can run a before/after comparison. Gains will vary from aFe's U.S. dyno figures because of altitude, humidity, and fuel octane differences, but directionally you'll see meaningful improvement.

Is the intake safe for dune driving?

Yes — the heat-shield enclosure seals the filter from engine bay air, and the synthetic media filters fine dust particulates. That said, deep water crossings require a snorkel regardless of intake brand — no aftermarket intake is waterproof without a snorkel.

Why buy from Xtreme 4x4 vs a US marketplace?

Stock on hand in the UAE (no 2-3 week shipping), local warranty handling, and we match fitment to the exact year/trim of your Patrol. Plus our prices are in AED with VAT included — no customs surprises.
